Zinc transporter 8 (ZnT8) is a protein in pancreatic beta cells, and antibodies against it are present in about 60-80% of patients with new-onset type 1 diabetes. Together with other diabetes autoantibodies — GAD-65, IA-2, and insulin autoantibodies — they help confirm the autoimmune nature of the disease.
This test is used in patients with new diabetes when distinguishing type 1 from type 2 is important, in adult-onset diabetes that may actually be latent autoimmune diabetes (LADA), and in family screening of patients with type 1 diabetes. Sample type is serum.
