While serum zinc is the most commonly used measure of zinc status, it can be affected by acute illness and inflammation. RBC zinc reflects longer-term zinc status and may be useful in selected clinical situations, although serum zinc remains the primary test in most cases.
This test is used in evaluation of suspected zinc deficiency when serum zinc may be misleading, in patients with chronic illness, malabsorption, or unusual dietary patterns. Sample type is whole blood in an EDTA tube.
