Pyridoxal-5-phosphate (PLP) is the active form of vitamin B6 and is involved in over 100 enzyme reactions, including amino acid metabolism, neurotransmitter production, and heme synthesis. Deficiency can cause neuropathy, anemia, and skin changes; toxicity from excess supplementation can also cause neuropathy.
This test is ordered to evaluate suspected B6 deficiency in patients with neuropathy, seizures, anemia, or malabsorption, and to investigate possible B6 toxicity in patients taking large doses of supplements. Sample type is plasma.
