Vitamin B12 and folate work closely together in the body, and their levels are typically evaluated together because deficiencies of either can produce similar findings — including a specific type of anemia called megaloblastic anemia. B12 deficiency can also cause neurological symptoms such as numbness, tingling, balance problems, and cognitive changes.
This combined test is used to investigate macrocytic anemia, evaluate unexplained fatigue or neuropathy, screen older adults or patients with malabsorption conditions, monitor patients on metformin or acid-suppressing medications (which can reduce B12 absorption), and assess vegetarians or vegans who may have limited dietary B12. Sample type is serum.
