Rapid viral culture uses cell lines that support influenza growth, combined with rapid identification techniques that detect viral antigens or genetic material within 1-3 days — much faster than traditional viral culture. While molecular testing has largely replaced culture for routine diagnosis, culture is still valuable for strain isolation and certain research or surveillance purposes.
This test is used in evaluating influenza-like illness when other testing is unavailable or yields ambiguous results, public health surveillance, and outbreak investigations. Sample type is a nasopharyngeal or nasal swab.
