VANCOMYCIN TROUGH

Vancomycin is a critical antibiotic for serious gram-positive infections, particularly methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). It has narrow therapeutic and toxicity windows — too little is ineffective, while too much causes kidney and ear toxicity. Trough monitoring (level just before the next dose) guides dose adjustments.

This test is used in patients on intravenous vancomycin for serious infections such as bloodstream infections, endocarditis, bone and joint infections, and pneumonia. Targets vary by indication and severity. Sample type is serum or plasma, drawn within 30 minutes before the next dose.
