Cytologic examination of urine identifies abnormal cells that may indicate cancer of the bladder, ureters, or other parts of the urinary tract. While not as sensitive as cystoscopy with biopsy, urine cytology is non-invasive and can detect high-grade urothelial cancers with reasonable sensitivity.
This test is used in evaluation of unexplained hematuria, surveillance after treatment for urothelial cancer, monitoring high-risk patients (occupational exposures, heavy smokers), and investigating urinary symptoms suggestive of bladder cancer. Multiple specimens collected on separate days improve sensitivity. Sample type is a voided urine specimen.
