Routine urine culture identifies common urinary tract pathogens such as E. coli, Klebsiella, Proteus, Enterococcus, and certain staphylococci. Bacterial counts and susceptibility testing on significant isolates guide treatment decisions.
This test is ordered to confirm urinary tract infections suggested by symptoms or urinalysis findings, evaluate recurrent or unresolved UTIs, screen during pregnancy, and guide antibiotic therapy in complicated infections. A clean-catch midstream specimen minimizes contamination and gives the most interpretable results. Sample type is a clean-catch urine specimen.
