A comprehensive urine culture extends beyond a standard culture by using enhanced techniques to detect a wider range of organisms, including those that are slow-growing, fastidious, or present in lower concentrations. Susceptibility testing identifies which antibiotics are effective against the bacteria found, supporting precise treatment decisions.
This test is particularly valuable in patients with recurrent or persistent urinary symptoms, complicated urinary tract infections, recent antibiotic exposure, immunocompromised status, or known urologic abnormalities. It is also used in pre-operative urologic workups and to evaluate atypical urinary tract presentations. Sample type is a clean-catch midstream urine specimen.
