Microscopic examination of urine sediment identifies cells, casts, crystals, and microorganisms that are not detected by dipstick testing. White blood cells suggest infection or inflammation, red blood cells indicate bleeding, casts can point to kidney parenchymal disease, and crystals may relate to stone-forming conditions.
This test is used when more detailed evaluation than routine dipstick is needed — particularly in suspected kidney disease, hematuria workup, recurrent urinary infections, or as part of comprehensive kidney evaluation. Sample type is a clean-catch midstream urine specimen.
