This reflex testing strategy follows current guidelines for evaluating thyroid function. TSH is measured first because it is the most sensitive indicator of thyroid dysfunction. If TSH is within the normal range, no further testing is performed. If TSH is abnormally high or low, Free T4 is automatically added to characterize the abnormality without requiring a second blood draw.
This test is commonly used for routine thyroid screening, evaluation of nonspecific symptoms, and monitoring of patients with stable thyroid disease. The reflex design helps avoid unnecessary testing in healthy patients while ensuring abnormal results are promptly clarified. Sample type is serum.
