TRYPTASE

Tryptase is released into the bloodstream when mast cells degranulate during allergic reactions or anaphylaxis. Persistently elevated baseline tryptase suggests systemic mastocytosis or other mast cell disorders, while transient elevations after a reaction support anaphylaxis as the cause of symptoms.

This test is used to confirm anaphylaxis when the clinical picture is unclear (a sample drawn within 1-4 hours of the reaction is most informative), evaluate suspected mastocytosis, and investigate unexplained recurrent flushing or anaphylaxis. Sample type is serum.
