TRAb antibodies bind to the TSH receptor on thyroid cells and can either stimulate (causing Graves disease) or block (causing hypothyroidism) thyroid function. The stimulating form is responsible for most cases of Graves disease, the leading cause of hyperthyroidism, accompanied by characteristic eye findings (Graves orbitopathy) and sometimes pretibial myxedema.
This test is used to confirm Graves disease as the cause of hyperthyroidism, evaluate Graves-related eye disease, predict relapse risk after antithyroid medication, and assess risk of neonatal hyperthyroidism in pregnant women with a history of Graves. Sample type is serum.
