Thyroglobulin antibodies are commonly elevated in autoimmune thyroid disease, including Hashimoto's thyroiditis and Graves disease. In patients with thyroid cancer who have had their thyroid removed, the presence of thyroglobulin antibodies can interfere with thyroglobulin tumor marker testing and must be measured separately.
This test is used as part of autoimmune thyroid workup (alongside TPO antibodies) and is especially important in monitoring patients with differentiated thyroid cancer, where thyroglobulin is used as a tumor marker. Patients with positive thyroglobulin antibodies require alternative monitoring strategies. Sample type is serum.
