Testosterone is produced primarily by the testes in men and in smaller amounts by the ovaries and adrenal glands in women. Levels naturally peak in the morning and decline through the day. Abnormal levels can have wide-ranging effects on energy, mood, muscle mass, libido, fertility, and overall health.
This test is used to evaluate suspected low testosterone in men with symptoms such as fatigue, decreased libido, or erectile dysfunction; investigate hyperandrogenism in women with hirsutism, acne, or irregular periods; assess delayed or precocious puberty; and monitor testosterone replacement or anti-androgen therapy. Morning samples are preferred. Sample type is serum.
