T3 uptake provides an indirect estimate of the binding capacity of thyroid hormone-carrying proteins, which historically helped distinguish true thyroid dysfunction from changes in binding proteins. Modern direct free T4 and free T3 measurements have largely replaced T3 uptake for routine thyroid evaluation.
This test is occasionally still used in calculating the free thyroxine index and in selected legacy testing protocols. Sample type is serum.
