IMP-type carbapenemases hydrolyze carbapenems and nearly all other beta-lactams, leaving very limited treatment options. They are found primarily in Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Acinetobacter, and certain Enterobacterales, particularly in healthcare-associated infections.
Detection of blaIMP in molecular susceptibility testing identifies organisms requiring specialized treatment with newer agents like cefiderocol or combinations such as aztreonam plus avibactam. It also triggers strict infection control. Sample type is typically a culture isolate or direct clinical specimen.
