Urinary sodium provides information about how kidneys are handling sodium and about the body's volume status. Low urinary sodium typically suggests volume depletion (the kidneys are conserving sodium), while higher values may indicate diuretic use, salt-wasting conditions, or normal sodium intake.
This test is used in evaluation of acute kidney injury (distinguishing prerenal causes from intrinsic kidney disease), hyponatremia workup, suspected diuretic abuse, and certain inherited tubular disorders. Sample type is a random urine specimen.
