Selenium is an essential trace element involved in antioxidant defense and thyroid hormone metabolism. Deficiency is rare in well-nourished populations but can occur with malabsorption, prolonged parenteral nutrition, or in geographic areas with selenium-poor soil. Toxicity from excessive supplementation can cause hair loss, brittle nails, neurological symptoms, and gastrointestinal problems.
This test is used to evaluate suspected deficiency in patients with malabsorption, long-term parenteral nutrition, or unusual symptoms; investigate possible toxicity from supplementation; and assess selenium status in certain workplace exposures. Sample type is serum or plasma.
