Rotavirus is one of the most common causes of severe diarrhea in infants and young children. While most cases resolve with supportive care, severe dehydration is a risk, especially in young infants and immunocompromised patients. Vaccination has significantly reduced disease burden, but rotavirus remains an important pathogen.
This test is ordered for children with significant or hospitalized diarrhea, particularly during winter months when rotavirus is most common, and during outbreak investigations. Results support hospital infection control and clinical management. Sample type is a stool specimen.
