RF is an autoantibody that can be elevated in rheumatoid arthritis as well as other autoimmune diseases, chronic infections, and even healthy older adults. A negative RF does not rule out rheumatoid arthritis, and positive results require clinical context for interpretation.
This test is ordered to evaluate joint pain, stiffness, or swelling suggestive of inflammatory arthritis. Anti-CCP testing is often performed alongside as it is more specific for rheumatoid arthritis. Sample type is serum.
