Reticulocytes are red blood cells that have just been released from the bone marrow and have not yet fully matured. A higher reticulocyte count means the marrow is producing more red blood cells than usual, while a lower count suggests the marrow is not responding adequately.
This test is used to determine whether anemia is due to decreased production (low reticulocyte count, as in iron, B12, or folate deficiency, or bone marrow failure) or increased destruction or loss (high reticulocyte count, as in hemolysis or recent bleeding). It is also used to monitor response to treatment for anemia and to evaluate bone marrow recovery after chemotherapy. Sample type is whole blood in an EDTA tube.
