RSV is one of the most common causes of respiratory illness in young children, particularly bronchiolitis and pneumonia in infants. It also causes significant illness in older adults and immunocompromised patients. The direct fluorescent antibody (DFA) test detects RSV antigens directly in respiratory samples within hours.
This test is ordered for infants and young children with bronchiolitis or pneumonia, especially during RSV season; older adults with severe respiratory illness; and immunocompromised patients with respiratory symptoms. Results support clinical management and infection control. Sample type is a nasopharyngeal swab or aspirate.
