Renin is the first hormone in the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system, which regulates blood pressure and fluid balance. Plasma renin testing can be measured as activity (functional assay) or concentration (direct measurement), depending on the laboratory method.
This test is used to evaluate resistant or unexplained hypertension, screen for and investigate primary aldosteronism, assess adrenal insufficiency, and monitor patients on certain antihypertensive medications. Aldosterone-to-renin ratio is a key calculation in primary aldosteronism workup. Sample type is plasma.
