RENIN ACTIVITY

Renin is produced by the kidneys in response to low blood volume or low sodium, initiating a cascade that ultimately increases blood pressure through angiotensin II and aldosterone. Abnormal renin activity can result from kidney disease, adrenal disorders, blood pressure medications, and inherited conditions.

This test is used to evaluate resistant hypertension, investigate primary aldosteronism (where the aldosterone-to-renin ratio is key), and assess adrenal insufficiency. Patient preparation — including posture, salt intake, and medication adjustments — significantly affects results and should follow specific protocols. Sample type is plasma.
