The Renal Function Panel typically includes BUN, creatinine, glucose, calcium, phosphorus, albumin, sodium, potassium, chloride, and bicarbonate. Together these values provide a focused assessment of kidney function and the electrolyte and mineral disturbances that often accompany kidney disease.
This panel is used to evaluate suspected acute or chronic kidney disease, monitor known kidney disorders, assess kidney function before procedures requiring contrast dye, monitor patients on medications that can affect the kidneys, and follow patients with diabetes, hypertension, or other conditions linked to kidney damage. Calculated estimated GFR is often included to better assess overall kidney function. Sample type is serum.
