The QuantiFERON-TB test measures interferon-gamma released by immune cells in response to proteins specific to Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Unlike the tuberculin skin test, it is not affected by prior BCG vaccination and requires only a single visit rather than two visits for skin testing.
This test is used to screen for latent TB infection in health care workers, immigrants from endemic areas, household contacts of TB cases, immunocompromised patients, and individuals starting immunosuppressive therapy. Positive results require additional clinical evaluation to distinguish latent from active disease. Sample type is whole blood collected in special tubes.
