PTT, ACTIVATED

Activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT or aPTT) measures the time required for clot formation when intrinsic and common pathway factors are activated. Prolonged APTT can indicate clotting factor deficiencies, inhibitors such as lupus anticoagulant, or anticoagulant therapy with heparin.

This test is most often used to monitor patients on unfractionated heparin, evaluate unexplained bleeding or bruising, screen for hemophilia and von Willebrand disease, work up suspected lupus anticoagulant, and assess preoperative bleeding risk. Sample type is whole blood in a sodium citrate (light blue) tube.
