PTH should be interpreted alongside calcium because the relationship between them defines the diagnosis. High calcium with high PTH suggests primary hyperparathyroidism, while low calcium with high PTH suggests secondary hyperparathyroidism. Low calcium with low PTH points to hypoparathyroidism.
This combined test is used in evaluating abnormal calcium levels, suspected parathyroid disorders, kidney disease-related mineral abnormalities, and surgical monitoring of parathyroid disease. Sample type is serum.
