PTH is secreted by the parathyroid glands and increases blood calcium by acting on bones, kidneys, and intestines. The 'intact' assay measures the biologically active, whole PTH molecule, providing the most accurate assessment of parathyroid function.
This test is ordered to evaluate high or low calcium levels, diagnose primary, secondary, or tertiary hyperparathyroidism, investigate hypoparathyroidism, assess parathyroid function in chronic kidney disease, and monitor patients after parathyroid surgery. Intraoperative PTH is also used during parathyroid surgery to confirm successful removal of overactive tissue. Results are best interpreted alongside calcium, phosphorus, and vitamin D levels. Sample type is serum or plasma.
