PROTHROMBIN TIME (PT)

The PT measures the time required for clot formation when certain clotting factors are activated. Results are typically reported along with the INR (International Normalized Ratio), which standardizes PT values across different laboratories and reagents.

This test is most often ordered to monitor patients on warfarin anticoagulation, with a typical therapeutic INR target of 2.0-3.0 for most indications. It is also used to evaluate unexplained bleeding or bruising, assess liver function (since most clotting factors are made in the liver), screen for clotting disorders, and as part of preoperative workup. Sample type is whole blood collected in a sodium citrate (light blue) tube.
