The protein/creatinine ratio in a random urine sample closely approximates the 24-hour protein excretion and is much more convenient. A ratio of 0.2 corresponds to roughly 200 mg/24 hours, providing an estimate of daily protein loss.
This test is used to evaluate proteinuria, screen for and monitor kidney disease, assess preeclampsia in pregnancy, and follow response to treatment. The convenience of a random sample makes it the preferred test for many clinical situations. Sample type is a random urine specimen.
