PSA is produced by the prostate gland and may be elevated in prostate cancer, but also in benign prostate enlargement, prostatitis, and after urinary procedures. Despite its limitations, PSA remains the primary blood-based screening test for prostate cancer when used with appropriate clinical context and risk discussion.
This test is used for prostate cancer screening in eligible men (shared decision-making about screening is recommended), monitoring known prostate disease, and following up urinary symptoms. Elevated results may prompt urology consultation and further evaluation. Sample type is serum.
