PROCALCITONIN

Procalcitonin is produced in response to bacterial infections and rises faster than many other markers, often within hours. Levels generally remain low in viral infections, autoimmune disease, and non-infectious inflammation, making procalcitonin uniquely useful for distinguishing bacterial infection.

This test is widely used in critical care to support diagnosis of bacterial sepsis, guide initiation and duration of antibiotic therapy, and assess severity. It can help reduce unnecessary antibiotic use when levels are reassuringly low. Procalcitonin is interpreted alongside clinical findings and other inflammatory markers. Sample type is serum or plasma.
