NT-proBNP is produced when the heart's ventricles are stretched by pressure or volume overload, as in heart failure. It is more stable than active BNP and widely used to diagnose, grade severity, and monitor heart failure.
This test is used in emergency settings to distinguish cardiac from non-cardiac causes of dyspnea, confirm or rule out heart failure in outpatients, grade severity, monitor treatment response, and assess prognosis. Higher values generally indicate worse cardiac function and outcomes. Sample type is plasma.
