Pregnenolone is derived from cholesterol and is the precursor to most steroid hormones. Levels can be abnormal in specific forms of congenital adrenal hyperplasia and certain rare enzyme deficiencies in steroid synthesis.
This test is part of detailed adrenal evaluation, used to investigate suspected enzyme deficiencies in steroid hormone synthesis, and in pediatric endocrine workup. It is typically interpreted alongside other steroid hormone measurements and ACTH stimulation testing. Sample type is serum.
