Urinary phosphorus reflects how kidneys handle phosphorus and helps evaluate the cause of abnormal serum phosphorus. The fractional excretion of phosphorus distinguishes between inappropriate kidney loss and other causes of phosphorus disturbances. Patterns help identify conditions such as primary hyperparathyroidism, vitamin D disorders, and inherited tubular disorders.
This test is used in evaluation of hypo- or hyperphosphatemia, parathyroid disorders, vitamin D abnormalities, and certain bone diseases. It is typically interpreted alongside serum phosphorus, calcium, PTH, and creatinine. Sample type is a random urine specimen.
