Anti-PLA2R antibodies target a receptor on kidney podocytes and are the principal autoantibody responsible for most cases of primary membranous nephropathy. Their presence helps distinguish primary disease from secondary forms caused by infections, medications, or cancers.
This test is used to support diagnosis of membranous nephropathy in patients with nephrotic syndrome, monitor disease activity, and predict response to treatment. Antibody levels typically fall with effective immunosuppressive therapy. Sample type is serum.
