mecA and the related mecC produce penicillin-binding protein 2a (PBP2a), which has low affinity for beta-lactam antibiotics. Their presence makes Staphylococcus aureus methicillin-resistant (MRSA), as well as other staphylococci. mecC is a less common variant that may be missed by some mecA-specific tests.
Detection of either gene identifies MRSA and similar resistant infections requiring vancomycin, linezolid, daptomycin, or other appropriate antibiotics. The combined panel ensures complete coverage of beta-lactam resistance in staphylococci. Sample type is typically a culture isolate or direct clinical specimen.
