PTHrP shares many actions with PTH and is produced by some tumors — particularly squamous cell cancers, renal cell carcinoma, breast and ovarian cancers — leading to hypercalcemia even when actual PTH levels are appropriately suppressed. LC-MS/MS testing measures PTHrP with high specificity and sensitivity.
This test is used to investigate the cause of hypercalcemia in patients with known or suspected malignancy, particularly when PTH is low or suppressed. It can also help monitor disease progression or treatment response in cancers known to secrete PTHrP. Sample type is plasma with careful handling.
