PTH is secreted by the parathyroid glands and increases blood calcium by acting on bones, kidneys, and intestines. Abnormally high or low PTH causes significant calcium and phosphorus disturbances.
This test is ordered to evaluate high or low calcium levels, diagnose primary, secondary, or tertiary hyperparathyroidism, investigate hypoparathyroidism, assess parathyroid function in chronic kidney disease, and monitor patients after parathyroid surgery. Results are best interpreted alongside calcium, phosphorus, and vitamin D. Sample type is serum or plasma.
