Pancreatic elastase-1 is produced by the pancreas and excreted in stool largely unchanged. Levels reflect pancreatic exocrine function — low elastase indicates pancreatic insufficiency, which can cause maldigestion, diarrhea, weight loss, and nutritional deficiencies.
This test is used to diagnose exocrine pancreatic insufficiency in patients with chronic pancreatitis, cystic fibrosis, pancreatic cancer, and other conditions affecting pancreatic function. Results guide decisions about pancreatic enzyme replacement therapy. Sample type is stool.
