Oxcarbazepine is used to treat partial-onset seizures in adults and children. The drug is rapidly converted to its active metabolite, 10-hydroxycarbazepine (MHD), which is what laboratories typically measure to reflect therapeutic activity.
This test is ordered when assessing therapeutic adequacy in patients with ongoing seizures, evaluating possible toxicity (symptoms include dizziness, double vision, fatigue, and ataxia), monitoring during pregnancy when levels can change substantially, and when interacting medications are introduced. The drug can also cause hyponatremia, so sodium levels are often checked alongside. Sample type is serum.
