Microscopic O&P examination looks for the eggs (ova), larvae, and adult forms of intestinal parasites. Common findings include various worms (such as roundworms, tapeworms, and hookworms) and protozoa (such as Entamoeba, Giardia, and Cryptosporidium). Sensitivity is improved by examining multiple specimens collected on separate days.
This test is used to evaluate diarrhea or other GI symptoms in patients with travel history, immunocompromise, exposure to contaminated water or food, or persistent unexplained symptoms. Specific tests such as Giardia EIA may be added when relevant. Sample type is stool in appropriate preservatives.
