FIT uses antibodies that specifically detect human hemoglobin in stool, making it both sensitive and specific for lower gastrointestinal bleeding. Unlike older guaiac-based tests, FIT is not affected by diet or medications, simplifying preparation and improving accuracy.
This test is recommended annually for colorectal cancer screening in average-risk adults and is also used to investigate symptoms or signs of GI bleeding, monitor known GI conditions, and follow up on iron deficiency anemia. A positive FIT typically prompts colonoscopy. Sample type is a stool specimen collected at home using a provided kit.
