NT-proBNP is produced when the heart's ventricles are stretched, as in heart failure. It is more stable in the bloodstream than BNP and is widely used to diagnose, grade severity, and monitor heart failure.
This test is used in emergency settings to distinguish cardiac from non-cardiac causes of shortness of breath, in outpatients to confirm or rule out heart failure, to grade severity of known disease, monitor response to treatment, and assess prognosis. Higher values generally indicate worse cardiac function and outcomes. Sample type is plasma.
