MYCOPLASMA PNEU. IGG/IGM ABS

M. pneumoniae causes 'walking pneumonia' and a range of respiratory illnesses. IgM antibodies appear early in acute infection, while IgG antibodies develop later and persist longer, indicating past exposure. Testing both classes together provides information about infection stage.

This test is used to evaluate patients with respiratory symptoms suggesting atypical pneumonia, especially in older children and young adults. Results help guide antibiotic selection, since M. pneumoniae does not respond to typical beta-lactam antibiotics. Acute and convalescent testing may be needed to confirm recent infection. Sample type is serum.
