MAGNESIUM, URINE

When blood magnesium is low, measuring urinary magnesium helps determine whether kidneys are retaining magnesium appropriately (indicating gastrointestinal losses or poor intake) or wasting magnesium (indicating renal losses from inherited tubular disorders or medications). The fractional excretion of magnesium can be calculated to distinguish these causes.

This test is used to evaluate unexplained hypomagnesemia, identify renal magnesium wasting, and investigate certain inherited tubular disorders. It can be performed on random or 24-hour urine samples. Sample type is urine.
