In women, LH triggers ovulation and supports the corpus luteum after; in men, it stimulates testosterone production by the testes. LH levels vary by menstrual cycle stage and rise sharply at menopause. The ratio of LH to FSH provides additional diagnostic information.
This test is used to investigate ovulation problems and infertility, irregular menstrual cycles, polycystic ovary syndrome (where LH is often disproportionately high), suspected menopause, low testosterone in men, and disorders of puberty. Sample type is serum.
