FIB-4 and APRI are validated formulas that combine routine lab values to estimate liver fibrosis severity, avoiding the need for liver biopsy in many cases. FIB-4 uses age, AST, ALT, and platelets; APRI uses AST and platelets. Both correlate with biopsy findings of advanced fibrosis or cirrhosis.
This comprehensive panel is used in patients with chronic liver disease — including hepatitis C, hepatitis B, fatty liver disease, and alcohol-related liver disease — to assess and monitor fibrosis non-invasively. Higher scores prompt closer follow-up and additional testing such as elastography. Sample type is serum and EDTA whole blood.
